For updating to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, Windows 7, there are always potential unwanted errors that interfere with the installation process.“Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disk” when selecting the drive to install Windows is such an error.

Why is that where the error “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disk” mentioned above?

This error is due to the computer we use standard BIOS EFI (UEFI) requires to install Windows on GPT format hard drive but your hard drive is using standard MBR format. To fix this you need to convert the hard drive from MBR to GPT.

Note when done:

  • Quick, easy to implement when installing Windows even if the old win.
  • In this way you will lose all your data on your computer, so for the Windows upgrade, make sure you back up the data from your hard drive.

When you are in the Windows installation, press Shift + F10 key, the black cmd window displays:

Here you type diskpart and press Enter to open the diskpart editor.

You type next list disk and press Enter to display the list of hard drives on the computer (1 hard drive may include multiple drives, normally a computer with only one hard drive including many C, D, E).

In the list of hard drives, you rely on the size of the hard drive in the Size column to identify the hard drive you are using on your computer. Note that if the Gpt column of the hard drive is marked with an *, then the hard drive is GPT format. If not, the hard drive is in MBR format.

My machine only has two hard drives, a 60 GB drive of a computer and a 3824 MB drive is the USB I’m using to install Windows. After defining your hard drive, type select Disk 0 and press Enter, where Disk 0 is the name of the computer hard disk you see in the Disk### column.

Finally, type convert GPT and press Enter to transfer the hard disk to the GPT format:

Finally, type convert GPT and press Enter to transfer the hard disk to the GPT format:

To check if the drive you have selected has been converted to GPT format, you can retype the list disk command and press Enter. If you selected the * in the Gpt column of your hard drive, you transferred the hard drive to GPT successfully.

Then you switch to the Windows Setup window, you will not see anything changed. Therefore, click Refresh to update the drive list and empty partition.

After updating, you will see only one part of the free space, select this partition and click on New> Apply to create a new drive and select the new Windows drive.

Once you have successfully migrated the MBR to GPT, it will no longer crash. “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disk”.

Good luck!
