Programs that you install are usually added during the boot process on Windows, Mac, and even Linux. But you can also add your favorite programs and let them start automatically each time you log in.
This is useful for background applications and automated tools that perform a certain function, but you can also add applications outside of the screen and they will pop up when you log in. Add startup programs with Windows
On Windows 7 and earlier versions, the Start menu usually contains the Startup folder. You can open the Start menu and copy paste the shortcut of the application you want to boot with the system.
On Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, it’s a bit different, press Windows + R, type shell:startup in the Run dialog box, and press Enter. The application shortcut that you add to the shell:startup will only start when logged in with your account and if you want them to start with any account then you type shell:common startup in the Run dialog box.
Copy the application shortcut to this folder and Windows will automatically load them when you log into the account. On Windows 10, you can drag and drop directly from the All Apps list to this folder.
Add startup programs to your Mac
At the same interface will allow you to disable startup programs or add favorite programs. First, open the Apple menu, select System Preferences. Then, click the Users & Groups icon and then click the Login Items button.
Add startup programs with Linux
Computers running different Linux operating systems will have different ways of doing things. For Ubuntu Unity, open Dash and type “Start“. Then, click Start Applications to see the list of startup applications. To add the application, click the Add button. Type a name and command to open the application. You can also use this tool to run a command at login.
You can also manage it from the hidden ~/.config/autostart/, first open up File Manager, type ~/.config in the address bar, and press Enter. Then, double-click the Autostart file or create it if it does not already exist.
Add a .desktop file here for programs to start automatically with the system. These .desktop files are application shortcuts, you can add them by dragging them from outside the desktop or by opening the ~/.config/autostart/.
